South Dakota Amateur Baseball uses the MLB/OBR Rulebook with the following exceptions:
MLB Rules that are NOT adopted by the SDABA:
- Runner on 2nd for extra innings.
- Pitch clock/timer. They are looking to implement a pitch clock in the future.
- Defensive shift ban.
- Larger (18”) bases.
- Three-batter minimum for Pitchers.
- Position players becoming pitchers.
- Mound visit limits – 2nd trip to the same pitcher in the same inning is still enforced. Pitcher can remain in the game.
- Coach’s helmets in the coach’s boxes.
MLB Rules differences as adopted by the SDUA:
- Courtesy Runner for F2: Allowed only after the player has played F2 defensively in the previous inning, unless player is listed as F2 on the lineup card and bats in the 1st
- Double Headers can be 7 innings.
- Starting Pitcher/DH: ALLOWED but with clarification. It must be listed on the lineup card presented to the umpire prior to the game. If there is no lineup card exchanged, this rule cannot be used.|
